A Busy Month for Flags!

Save the Flags has had a very month of June, having attended and hosted 10 events in 14 days, many coinciding with celebrations around National Flag day on June 14th and Juneteenth on June 19th. Here’s a brief timeline of events:


June 6th - Jerry Benson presented a talk and exhibit at the historic site of Camp Ward in Detroit where the First Michigan Colored Infantry Regiment formed and trained.

June 8th - Director VanAcker presented The Battle Flags of Michigan Film to the Ann Arbor Civil War Round Table.

June 10th - The Battle Flags of Michigan Film was presented to the Historical Society of Greater Lansing

June 11th - Director VanAcker gave a Save the Flags talk to the Hadley Township Historical Society in Hadley, Michigan.

June 14th - The Fellowship Lodge #236 of Swartz Creek , Michigan continued their long support of Save the Flags with an adoption of a flag carried by the Fourth Michigan Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. 

June 14th -  Save the Flags delivered the keynote address as a part of the Flag Day celebrations in Burton, Michigan.

June 15th - Save the Flags hosted the St. Gerard Senior Girl Scout Troop 30152 in flag storage.

June 16th - The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce visited the flag collection in conjunction with an upcoming article in their LRCC FOCUS Business Monthly magazine featuring Save the Flags.

June 16th - Lloyd and Mary Lewis, descendants of George Cole, who saw service with the First Michigan Cavalry Regiment, visited the flag collection. Our special thanks to the Lewis’ for their generous support of the project.

June 20th - The Order of Founders and Patriots of America adopted three Spanish American War flags carried by the 33rd and 34th Michigan Infantry Regiments.
