Navy Veteran Mary Haight Visits Flags
Save the Flags was honored to host Mary Haight on September 3, 2026. Mary is a direct descendant of Private Joseph Zimmerman who fought with the 15th Michigan from their enlistment until his discharge in 1863. Baptiste Zimmerman also fought with the 15th and died of disease at Pittsburg Landing on April 28, 1862, about a month after he and his cousin Joseph were engaged at the Battle of Shiloh.
The cousins were both 44 when they enlisted with the regiment in Monroe, Michigan. Mary, as a disabled veteran of the Navy, wanted to pay honor to her relatives and their service by viewing the flags they fought so bravely beneath. Our thanks to Mary for her service and for her support of the flag project.
