Dear Friends from Bentonville
STF spent a memorable afternoon with Mr. Colby Lipscomb and his partner, Mr. Grady Everett, viewing flags on August 5, 2026. Mr. Lipscomb is the registrar for the Division of State Historic Sites of North Carolina and previously worked at the Bentonville, North Carolina Battlefield. Save the Flags Director VanAcker had the honor of meeting him at the battlefield during filming for The Battle Flags of Michigan in 2024.
Numerous Michigan units saw service at Bentonville March 19-21, 1865 and it proved to be one of the last major battles of the war. The Michigan regiments engaged were the 10th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 19th and 21st Michigan Infantry Regiments, Battery B of the First Michigan Light Artillery Regiment, the 9th Michigan Cavalry and the First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics Regiment. Two Medals of Honor were awarded to soldiers of the 14th Michigan, George W. Clute and Henry E. Plant, for action at Bentonville in defending the battle flag of the regiment and in capturing a confederate flag.
